The 1990s are a decade that fascinates Zeitgeist. Everything had a long-lasting effect on the fashion industry, including pop culture, technology, music, and international politics. Global supply networks and technology advancements were introduced throughout this decade, which contributed to the growth of fast Fashion Trends and internet shopping. Fashion started to become more accessible thanks to the internet, which also helped to prepare it for the impending arrival of social media shopping platforms and influencers. Customers now had inside access to fashion formerly available only to those in the industry’s inner circle.
We’re still completely enamored with 90s pop culture even after 20 years. Consider Kaia Gerber’s sudden ascent to supermodel prominence, Versace’s FW 19 collection, and Jonah Hill’s fantastic film Mid 90s (10/10 would suggest). However, why?
Maybe it’s because the Millenial generation is now getting to the age that their favorite supermodels and celebrities from the decade were. We feel as though we were let down by the decade’s true offerings, perhaps because we were technically born in the 1990s. Betrayed by our young.
Another idea has it that our Instagram feeds are overrun with photos of second-generation royal celebrities, their street style reminiscent of the 1990s. I’m envious of the collections of high-end vintage apparel they take from their parents’ wardrobes.
For whatever reason, we are fully committed to the comeback of the decade that gave us Bratz Dolls, Nirvana, Sex and the City, and the feud between Biggie and Tupac. After all, this decade hasn’t exactly been stellar thus far, has it?
These celebrity outfits and fashion trends from the 90s are still just as hot in 2024.
1. White Ribbed Tanks
Without the recognizable white ribbed tank, often known as the wife-beater in the past, what would 90s Fashion Trends be like? Even Mariah Carey rates this Dolce & Gabbana tank top and miniskirt combination as one of her best outfits from the 1990s. Casual would be the best term to describe 90s red carpet Fashion Trends. When you can rock your best tee and jeans, why would you choose to walk the red carpet in a gown? I’m so rich I can wear anything to this fucking event, Mariah’s appearance seems to be whispering.
Wear a denim skirt and strappy sandals with your white ribbed blouse to replicate Mariah’s 2021 look. Give up the waist-tied jacket and accessorize like the goddamn grownup you are by adding a statement purse to avoid looking like a kid.
2. Straight Leg Jeans
Kate Moss’s 1990s airport fashion would be the subject of endless discussion. The paparazzi, thank heavens. Also, her relationship with Johnny Depp was plenty of PDA, but I’m getting off topic. Model-off-duty style was revolutionized by Kate Moss, who was one of the most sought-after supermodels of the decade, with her casual tees, Levi’s 501 jeans, and carefree attitude. Being stylish was made cool by her own sense of style.
The leopard bag, white shirt, and square-toed ankle boots are still very popular this year, even if we are meant to be talking about straight-leg jeans. Wearing Zeitgeist’s vintage Levis, we would definitely recreate this H2T outfit.
3. Slip Dresses
Slip dresses were a mainstay of every 90s celebrity wardrobe since they were worn by Carrie Bradshaw and Sarah Jessica Parker, and by extension, by nearly every other woman on the planet.
Please do not misunderstand us. The combination of SJP’s slip dress and platform sandals is still immaculate. Adhere to her monochromatic look by wearing stacked gold jewelry, nude floss sandals, and a pale pink slip. But please, adopt a sleek ponytail in place of the outdated 90s haircut.
4. Tie Dye T-Shirts
Please take another look if these coordinated Destiny’s Child looks don’t inspire you to form a girl band with your closest friends. Though most people identify tie-dye tees with the 1970s, they experienced a comeback in popularity in the 1990s.
These ensembles have a lot going on. A great deal. The low-rise leather leggings, baby blue square-toe boots, tinted sunglasses, and tie-dyed baby shirts all shout late 90s. However, if you really put your mind to it, you could easily persuade me that these are Gucci from the Michele era.
5. Leopard Print Coats
The grunge scene of the 1990s was ruled by Courtney Love. Zeitgeist girls in high school idolized her ruined fishnets, smudged makeup, and misguided relationship.
Given how frequently leopard print appears in Fashion Trends, it’s safe to assume that it will never completely go out of style. Layer your leopard print garment over a silk slip midi dress that exudes the same babydoll lingerie sensations for a contemporary take on a classic style. Replace the torn fishnet stockings with a pair of dirty Doc Martens.
6. Oval Sunglasses
One of the many things we adore about this ensemble is Lisa Bonet’s circular sunglasses. Her bohemian style has a hint of the avant-garde. A seemingly effortless quality that defies description.
Oval sunglasses are a great way to include a little bit of her carefree flair into your summertime ensembles. They feel just as good as those round ones you wish you hadn’t worn so obsessively during your high school Lana Del Ray period, but without being as blatantly bohemian. You can get plenty of ideas for your 2021 wardrobe from her daughter/spitting image, Zoe Kravitz.
7. Leather Blazers
The epitome of the 90s It-Girl was Cindy Crawford. Even though she wore exquisite designer gowns to grace magazine covers, her off-camera demeanor was far more laid back. Her boyish ensembles for the airport are simple and functional. Come autumn, we’ll give this leather blazer look a go.
We will be watching this winter for Kaia Gerber’s re-creations of this style, like the Fashion Trends canary in a coal mine that we are. I’m hoping to provide some amazing vintage leather blazers on Zeitgeist for you to try on. We wait until then.
8. Scrunchies
Zeitgeist’s mood boards are adorned with images of Janet Jackson in a carefree yet timeless manner. Our cropped turtlenecks, after all, come right out of her style bible. The scrunchied high pony is what we’re actually here for, even though we’d totally rock Janet’s outfit from H2T. The scrunchie lends a charming Peter Pan element when paired with her ab-baring cropped turtleneck.
9. Strappy Sandals
The strappy sandal has seen a significant resurgence. Any true Fashion Trends enthusiast will gladly give a pinky toe for the occasional garment deserving of such distinction, even though our feet may not agree. A contemporary spin on the 90s floss sandal might be to try a pair of kitten heels.
Halle Berry’s appearance speaks for itself. The statement is made by its lace-up sides.
10. Satin Bomber Jackets
Christy Turlington was undoubtedly one of those supermodels in the 1990s. She traversed each runway. She was a designer’s dream come true. What’s even more amazing is that she aged perfectly.
Her off-runway look was sophisticated and refined but nonetheless casual. Don’t you wish you could see the old Versace in her closet?
Our honest opinion is that Bella Hadid would look amazing in this Turlington outfit.
11. Bike Shorts
Princess Diana was a trailblazer in the 80s and 90s athleisure trend. In her crewneck sweater and spandex ensembles, she was a Fashion Trends forward woman.
The only things cooler than Princess Di (and maybe the Kardashians) are cycling shorts on a Zeitgeist girl. Consider Hailey Bieber’s Princess Diana-inspired Vogue Paris campaign as inspiration for your next supermarket shop, and dress from head to toe.
12. Oversized Blazers
Yes, Julia Roberts in her own right was a style icon. Without Pretty Woman or Notting Hill, though, how would 90s Fashion Trends be? Unthinkable! Her off-screen style was characterized by her distressed denim, nicely tousled locks, and simplistic necessities.
Wearing antique jeans in 2021 will help her style her outfit sustainably. In the process, throw away the plastic bottle.
13. Headscarves & Bandanas
When one thinks about 90s hip-hop Fashion Trends, it’s hard to avoid picturing Aaliyah in her flowy sweatsuits and headbands.
Before it was even a thing, Aaliyah was wearing streetwear. It’s obvious that millennial superstars like Billie Eilish were inspired by her gender-bending, seductive attire and loose sweatsuits.
2021: Forgo traditional cotton bandanas in favor of antique silk scarves. Wear anything in your closet with enthusiasm. Really, everything, no?
14. Cargo Pants
Was this coordination of cargo pants deliberate or coincidental? The gift bag contains what? Was Jennifer Aniston really under the impression that this look would look well with a brown fanny pack? Is Brad doing alright?
Even yet, we still adore her cherry red cargo pants—that is, when they are worn appropriately for 2021. Select a pair with a high rise and athleisure vibe rather than Aniston’s low-slung style. Replace the hopelessly outdated platform foam flip-flops with a contemporary pair of kitten-heeled leather flip-flops with a croc pattern.
15. LBDs
Although LBDs weren’t exactly created in the 1990s, supermodels like Naomi Campbell helped popularize them and made them an essential component of an It-Girl’s going-out wardrobe.
You may reproduce the effect with a variety of 2021 LBD styles, like as one shoulder, leather, silk slip dresses, and lace Victorian frills. The list is endless. The Bottega Veneta style.
