Early 2000’s Fashion Trends That Were Made Popular By Black Culture

Fast Fashion Trends merchants worldwide may take inspiration from Paris Hilton’s 21st birthday dress, but style icon and actress LisaRaye McCoy wore a similar chainmail ensemble to the 2000 Video Music Awards two years before the “original” made its debut (micro bag in tow). Renowned R&B artist Aaliyah had already made enormous cargo pants and gradient sunglasses her defining look before model Bella Hadid declared them essential. Additionally, although velour tracksuits have made Juicy Couture a household name, the plush set was inspired by the Baby Phat empire of Kimora Lee Simons.

Given that the fashion trends from the early 2000s are making a comeback in 2020, it is important to give respect to black culture.

Having missed my opportunity to fully participate in the trends the first time, I saw my adult comeback as an opportunity to open up entirely. Gathering up every jersey dress, tube top, and Kangol hat I had never had the pleasure of owning, I quickly discovered that it was almost impossible to talk about the comeback of early aughts styles without mentioning Black culture. I grew up seeing video vixens decked up in complete denim outfits, which are now ubiquitous on Instagram models.Very similar to the archetype of Lauren London’s character “New New” from the iconic movie ATL, which is what made me decide to get the huge brand earrings that all Black girls had. Long before Carrie Bradshaw became well-known for her adored monogram necklace, which she referred to as jewellery made of “ghetto gold.”

“I quickly discovered that it was practically hard to talk about the reappearance of early aughts trends without mentioning Black culture’s influence.”

However, as Ohio-born designer and philanthropist Ron Blassingame famously said, “A ghetto is nothing but creativity that hasn’t been stolen, yet.” Naturally, these days it would be difficult to go through your timeline and discover a celebrity or influencer without their own nickname flaunting proudly around their necks. demonstrating the popularity of styles that were thought to be problematic twenty years ago.
