New Materials: Inversa Leather is teaming up with Piper & Skye, a high-end Butterfly Mark-certified leather accessory business.

Inversa Leather uses invasive animals like pythons and lionfish to create its regenerative leathers in a novel effort to preserve ecosystems. Inversa’s invasive python leather is used by Piper & Skye in their most recent collaboration, which is now available. The non-native Burmese python, which was unintentionally introduced from Southeast Asia, is extremely overpopulated in the Florida Everglades National Park and the surrounding area. The park’s continued destruction of its aquatic ecology, caused in part by invasive species, led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Soho bag, a traditional top-handle bag, sells for $940, and the Braemar tote, sells for $1,250, both styles by Piper & Skye. The outside of the Soho bag is made from Inversa’s invasive python, while the exterior of the Braemar tote is a mixture of Inversa leather with pirarucu fish and alligator leather, which is supposed to be more “sustainably” obtained.

Our Butterfly Mark accreditation plays a role in regard to our leather products. Positive Luxury has assessed our business model, including our sourcing practices, through an ESG+ review. According to Piper & Skye’s creative director and founder Joanna MacDonald, the company earned 46% over certification requirements.
