I am getting queries about the newest fall fashion trends, so it seems that everyone was in the mood for fall fashion even after the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale ended. As we look through our closets and decide what stays and what goes, as well as what we might want to add in preparation for autumn, everyone wants to know what’s in and what’s out.
I believe that many of the patterns we saw last autumn are reappearing this autumn, but we are embracing the trends that were on the outskirts last season. Many of the fall fashion trends from last season are still relevant now, but others were difficult to locate in big-box retailers in the early part of last fall.
A Word About Fashion Trends
I have to disclaim a few things while talking about fashion trends, as usual. Initially, I am examining mainstream stores that are frequented by regular women who read my blog. These are all widely available at popular retail stores like Evereve, LOFT, Anthropologie, etc., yet depending on where you live, you might think that some of them are already out of style or that no one is wearing them yet.
Of course, you don’t have to wear anything simply because it’s “having a moment.” You can use this information however you see fit. Fashionable ladies are aware of current trends and carefully select pieces for their wardrobes based on how well they complement their own styles, body types, and lifestyle etc.
Lastly, this is not meant to be a comprehensive compilation of fall fashion trends. There are still many things that I haven’t listed here, but these are the ones that have caught my attention thus far and most closely match my personal style.
Ultimately, it’s important to wear what you love, regardless of what “trend reports” suggest. However, if you like to stay up to date, here are 12 practical 2024 autumn fashion trends for regular women.
Fall Fashion Trends: What’s IN For 2024
For your shopping convenience, I have included further examples of each trend in the widgets at the conclusion of each section, and I have made an effort to include a range of merchants and pricing ranges. If you want further information, you can click on those. As always, I’m grateful if you use my links to support my work by making purchases!
1. Wide Leg Jeans
You did realise that I had to start here, after all. Yes, my friends, wide leg silhouettes still rule the denim sections of my favourite stores, and I’m gradually witnessing an increase in the number of regular ladies who wear them. Additionally, I’m delighted to see more full-length designs making an appearance for fall, since I find them much easier to style with boots and other closed-toe footwear. Furthermore, they elongate and flatter the majority of women.
Later this week, we’ll talk about more denim trends, but for those who don’t like wide-leg jeans, everything goes right now. Wearing trendy jeans is less about the type of pants you wear and more about how you dress them.
2. Cropped Jackets
My fall wardrobe would not be complete without outfit-completing coats, and this year cropped jackets are making a resurgence, presumably because they look great with high-rise and wide-leg denim types. They also look good with straight-leg jeans and flares, in my opinion. I’m seeing a wide range of materials, including denim and blends of wool and twill.
3. Skirts
Skirts are making a comeback as a key component of the autumn 2024 wardrobe after being neglected for a while. Denim skirts come in a variety of lengths, but the long, straight designs are especially popular. Pleated skirts are becoming more popular, and satiny bias-cut skirts are still in style. Also in style are miniskirts.
Your skirts go well with both sophisticated and casual ensembles. They look great with sneakers, knee boots, pointy-toe slingbacks and squared-off Mary Janes.
4. Vests
For spring, vests were very popular, but they were a little difficult to obtain and the better ones went quickly. They’re all over this autumn. Suit vests, like the one above, are quite popular right now, and jumper vests are also very popular.
Wear your vests as separate tops now, and for fall, wear them layered over a tee or tank. Regarding what to wear with them, as previously mentioned, I’m seeing a lot of vests—sweater and suit—paired with denim skirts. They go well with jeans as well. If you want a more formal appearance for work or other occasions, you may wear them with matching or non-matching pants.
5. Breton Stripes
Even in the autumn, stripes are still popular, especially Breton stripes. Adding a contemporary piece to your existing wardrobe has never been easier, and there are plenty of possibilities for placement and width that will suit every body type.
6. Pop of Red
Red is ruling all trend lists; we’ll discuss more about colour trends later this week. Although there are many red dresses and shirts available, I think it’s more appropriate to add a red item as a splash of colour. Consider wearing a red ball cap, red sneakers, red Mary Janes (like the ones above), red sling bags, red belts, or even red shoes.
7. Trousers
This season, relaxed trousers are still very popular. The chicest way to wear them is with trainers for a striking contrast, but this is also great news for individuals who require workwear. Right now, there are a tonne of excellent non-denim choices available.
In addition to the relaxed silhouettes, there are straight and flared versions to choose from. The delicate brown and black checked pattern of the LOFT Sutton Flares, which I styled last spring, is returning for autumn.
8. Ladylike Shoes
This season, pointed-toe flats, kitten heels—especially slingback styles—as well as ballet flats and Mary Janes are all very popular. Wear them with dresses or skirts to embrace the “era of elegance” that is gaining traction, or wear them with jeans for a stylish contrast.
9. Textured Knitwear
Although I haven’t seen this included in any trend lists I’ve read, I did notice that knitwear has a lot more texture and design when browsing through all of my favourite stores. Undoubtedly, the trend is shifting back towards less austere designs and more intriguing embellishments.
10. Brown Footwear & Accessories
This season, brown hues—especially deep, chocolatey tones—are dominating the shoe industry. This is something I became aware of last year, but it’s really taking off for autumn of 2024, and I’m all for it. These warmer, richer tones seem so new and exciting after all these years of wearing so much taupe and pale beige. They also go well with the returning darker denim washes for this season.
11. Leopard Print
Yes, the leopard has returned after being absent for a mere minute. I am unable to ignore it. I’ve seen it on almost every list of 2024 Fall Trends, and leopard prints are available in various forms at all of the big-box stores.
You can be asking yourself, “But leopard was never gone?” It is timeless.
Sure, leopard is a timeless print that is always in style, but a few years ago it was so popular that it practically vanished from the main mainstream stores. That is typically the case when a style becomes popular all at once. Additionally, when a trend is brought back, it usually looks a little different than it did the first time around.
This time around, I think the leopard prints are a little more refined, elegant, and abstract. The best tip I’ve heard is to compare any leopard print items you have in your closet to those you see in stores that most closely match your own style if you’re unsure if they appear contemporary or not.
I’m beginning over when it comes to animal prints because I pretty much threw them all away, including my cherished ATM cheetah t-shirt, which I owned for a good few seasons. Although I don’t intend to purchase many leopard items this season, I may add one or two well picked pieces to my fall outfit.
Final Thoughts on What’s IN for Fall 2024
Although there are undoubtedly other autumn fashion trends for 2024, these are a few of the more well-known ones that I’ve already observed. In later posts, I’ll go into greater detail about the latest trends in shoes, colours, denim, and accessories.
Remember, trends are only that—trends. Certain ones remain longer than others, and others come and go. Simply disregard it if it’s not your style. Not sure what to do? Before investing in a more costly item, try it out with something cheaper. In the event that any of those trends resonate with your personal style, you may want to invest a little more time in them over the next months.
Fall Fashion Trends: What’s OUT For 2024
This year, I almost removed this section since nothing is truly “out” in the sense that trend cycles are changing so frequently. Instead, some of us could think that a particular style is outdated or that it isn’t as common in stores. Thus, this list should be regarded with a grain of salt, much as “What’s IN for 2024.”
Nobody is advising against donning your go-to taupe, low shaft ankle boots with side cutouts. You are who you are. However, I believe this is a decent starting point if you’re interested in learning about some of the looks that are now losing ground to the hottest trends.
- boots and taupe shoes: Though the darker browns and warmer tones are more in style right now, it’s not like you aren’t seeing any of these possibilities, and they don’t necessarily appear antiquated. They’re also a simple method to switch up your wardrobe because brown shoes are currently available in practically every design.
- Booties with low shafts: Although we became accustomed to thinking of lower shaft booties (3′′ or 4′′ shafts) as the standard since they paired so well with the ankle-length skinny jeans that ruled the fashion scene for so long, they aren’t quite as classic as the ankle boots with the more typical 5′′ or 6′′ shafts. And we’re witnessing the comeback of wide legs and flares now that they’re in style
- jeggings: Though they are currently very much on the periphery, low rise skinny jeans may be making a comeback. Whether or not they do, however, is still to be seen. If you do wear thin jeans, the style to go for these days is more of a narrow straight cigarette leg and higher rise than the skin-tight leggings (jeggings) we wore in the 2010s with our long tunics and low-shaft ankle boots.
- tunic tops: Since they go so well with skinny jeans, tunic tops seem to have gone out of style. I’m glad to see this look go, even though I’m sure it will ultimately resurface in some capacity. This look wasn’t flattering on the majority of us.
- long cardigans:
