Fall Outfit is the time to show off what you can do with your wardrobe, if summer is about glamming up how fantastic you look without much on. It’s time to wear the same blue jeans Monday through Friday and tuck into your big, fluffy sweaters. Fall fashion is all about layering without appearing like a stuffed penguin and pulling out your best transitional pieces, including classic trench coats and clunky ankle boots. Here’s how you can effortlessly copy the fall wardrobes of stylists and street-style icons with little to no effort.
Everybody has seen or owned a fantastic autumn trench coat. Choose a leather version with low-rise denim for a novel look in 2023. Doja Cat, who wore the ensemble in her “Attention” music video, and famous stylist Aisha Rae both approve of the edgy style. “My favourite Fall Outfit consists of an oversized leather trench coat, a white ribbed tank, and flare low-rise or oversized baggy vintage denim paired with a pointed heel or leather boot,” the woman states.
2023 has witnessed a move away from fad-driven, trendy items and towards high-quality closet staples, or what the fashion industry has coined ‘silent luxury’ dressing. The appeal of quiet luxury is that it’s full of classic pieces that you can wear year after year, so it’s more of a style aesthetic than a fad. Rae suggests muted colours, fitted trousers, clean white button-ups, trench coats, loafers, and ballet flats for a fall outfit.
Autumnal weather is infamously erratic. It is pleasant and cold one moment, then stuffy and heated the next. According to Stitch Fix stylist Gillian McHattie, layering is really important for your Fall Outfit wardrobe. “It’s advisable to have a lightweight outer layer, such as a denim jacket, that can be worn over your outfit to provide additional warmth in case of sudden temperature fluctuations,” the expert advises.
An easy Fall Outfit that is guaranteed to work is a jumper dress and knee-high boots. Dresses in sweaters are cosy, fashionable, and simple to accessorise. All you need for this ensemble is your go-to jewellery and a neutral pair of knee-high boots. A knitted minidress looks great with knee-high boots as well, but when the temperature drops, it’s often advisable to go lower.
Snag a nice pair of pantsuits, and you’ll be set for any professional gathering or elegant dinner party. You can style the two-piece outfit with sneakers, mule pumps, boots, or flats. It’s really effortless to wear—I like to wear a crop top or tee beneath. The best part is that, like this Fashion Week participant, you may wear the coordinates solo or together.
It doesn’t have to be difficult to put together a fall workplace wardrobe. It is simple to pull off McHattie’s go-to office style. “Reach for your favourite pair of jeans, top the ensemble with a lightweight knit sweater in a striking colour, and complete the look with an oversized blazer for an office-appropriate look,” she suggests.
This autumn, McHattie predicts a trend that Stitch Fix has named Proportion Play to be quite popular. The main idea behind this trend is to embrace voluminous, exaggerated silhouettes that can be balanced out by wearing more fitting pieces. It’s advised to adopt the enormous blazer and tight skirt look of style icon Emili Sindlev. However, a billowy skirt and little top might look just as good.
We’re seeing the fashion version of TikTok’s “strawberry girl summer” this autumn, called “apple girl autumn” by Stitch Fix, thanks to the autumn 2023 runways. “Apple girl autumn will be marked with pops of red scattered throughout people’s wardrobes in a variety of traditional autumn textures,” says Mchattie. To rock the style, opt for a red purse or pair of shoes, or incorporate some candy red hosiery, as seen during fashion week.
The ideal piece of clothing for any season is a slip dress. In the spring and summer, wear them by themselves; in the autumn and winter, layer everything to death. Invest in a trench coat and a light turtleneck underneath; we particularly adore Pernille Teisbaeck’s grungy leather jacket and motorcycle boots ensemble.
In 2001, we all thought Britney and JT’s denim ensemble was a little too much, but these days, an all-denim ensemble is in. It’s quite simple to assemble and elegantly stylish. All you need to do is wear your go-to jean jacket or shirt with some baggy jeans. For an on-trend style, you may also pair it with a long denim skirt.
I hate tights, therefore my favourite fall outfit combo is a dress over jeans. (They rip, always!) You may wear your fall jeans and Free People summer outfit together without having to choose between the two thanks to this easy combination. When choosing your undergarment denim, opt for a thin or straight cut with a cropped or cuffed hem for added style points.
Fall Outfit ideas
Wider-legged denim styles are becoming more and more popular every year. According to McHattie, Stich Fix’s wide-leg trousers sales have increased this year, making this the ideal moment to explore the trend. “A fitted bodysuit or a boxy cropped tee is my favourite way to style loose denim or trousers,” McHattie continues.
Recall the days when Avril Lavigne was our style icon, Hot Topic was our mall haunt, and we all wore way too much eyeliner? Rae claims that style is becoming popular among Gen-Zers for their autumn wardrobes, and we couldn’t be happier about it. “This Fall Outfit, we can expect to see a trend in band t-shirts, oversized wide-leg pants, chunky black belts with silver chains and mini plaid tennis skirts.”
Hold on! Store your summer skirts for later. They can be modified in a few different ways for autumn: 1. Choose a thin enough jumper to tuck into your skirt; 2. Wear tights underneath your skirt; and 3. Accessorise with your preferred ankle- or knee-high boots. Put your preferred transitional jacket on top, and presto! You can now take #OOTD pictures in the pumpkin patch with your skirt ready.
Although neutrals like soft grey and caramel brown are predicted to be popular Fall Outfit colour trends in 2023, Barbiecore bright pink is still expected to be popular. “We will be seeing the colour pink more this autumn after the hit movie” new Barbie “with all the Barbie brand deals and partnerships from this summer,” Rae says. “Pops of pink will be everywhere!” Use a bright pink purse or pair of shoes to inject some colour into an all-neutral ensemble.
Since they take no thought, matching sets are the ultimate indulgence for indolent dressers. You’re set to go with only the top and matching bottoms. Choose a matching skirt set when the weather teeters back towards warmth (as it often does in the autumn) or trousers and a blazer for colder temperatures. A matched pair is as simple as it gets.
Similar to dresses, jumpsuits are an all-purpose piece of clothing. All you need to do is put it on, and you’re good to go. A jumpsuit may also be easily dressed up with a structured purse, your favourite belt, and boots. All it takes is a little effort to create a stylish look.
Go completely black when in doubt. Although we might not advise wearing all-black everything on a hot, sunny day, black is definitely stylish no matter the season. Try wearing a coat with fur on top and trousers with subtle stripes to create a more put-together look.
Don’t be scared to elevate your casual wear to a true fashion statement. You really can be both comfortable and fashionable at the same time. Simply put on your go-to track trousers and accessorise with a stylish blazer. Even though the ensemble is surprising, it looks really great.
Wear a shimmery skirt like this sequin number to give your beloved button-down shirt a new lease on life on the weekend. Whatever your intentions are for the evening, you’ll look instantly put together. You could even be permitted to wear this outfit on Monday morning if your workplace has a more relaxed dress code.
